Autograph Endorsement signed: "Approved/Robert Anderson/Major 1st Arty/Comdg", 3¾x2. Dated "1859" in another hand at lower left corner. Major Robert Anderson was in command of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, at the time of the Confederate attack, April 12, 1861, beginning the Civil War. Anderson was appointed Brigadier General in the Regular Army by President Lincoln on May 15, 1861. After an illness, he retired in 1863. Writing and signature very light. Nail head-size white spot touches last 2 letters of signature. Show through of writing on verso. Irregular top edge.
