In command of Fort Sumter the day the Civil War began.
Carte de Visite Photograph signed: "Robert Anderson/Br.Genl. USA". Sepia, 2¼x4 overall, image 2x3¼ (two surfaces). Photographer's imprint at lower border: "Gurney & Son Photo NY" and on verso: "J. Gurney & Son/707/Broadway/N.Y.". Major Anderson was in command of the federal forts in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. In December 1860, he moved his entire force to the larger and more defensible of the two, Fort Sumter. On April 12, 1861, the Civil War began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter. After he surrendered, Major Anderson and his troops proceeded northward by sea. In May 1861, Anderson was promoted to Brigadier General and was brevetted Major General in February 1865, so this carte de visite was signed during the Civil War. Worn corners, slightly soiled, pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Overall, fine condition.
