MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT PATTERSON
The highly experienced American general writes an address on this clipping from a letter
Autograph note unsigned. Address of T. Pimford written in the general's hand. 3½x3. Irish-born Major General Robert Patterson (1792-1881) was an American businessman and military officer who fought in three major American wars of the 19th century. He volunteered to fight in the War of 1812 and served in the 2nd Pennsylvania Militia and the United States Army; he was discharged in 1815 as a captain. He was then commissioned as a major general of volunteers during the Mexican-American War and fought during the Siege of Veracruz and the Battle of Cerro Gordo, where he was wounded, and led the American pursuit of the Mexican army to Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, where he was the first to enter the city. During the American Civil War, he was appointed major general of Pennsylvania volunteers and commanded the Department of Pennsylvania and the Army of the Shenandoah. However, Patterson failed to delay Confederate forces at the Battle of Hoke's Run (July 2, 1861), which took pressure off the Confederate States Army and contributed to the Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861). Patterson was widely criticized for his performance at Hoke's Run and was given an honorable discharge late in July 1861. Patterson was also a cotton miller and returned to this work after being mustered out of the Civil War. He also wrote a book, A Narrative of the Campaign in the Valley of the Shenandoah, in 1861 (1865). Toned. Edges irregular and worn. Horizontal and vertical creases throughout. Pencil note (unknown hand) on upper margin. Small spots of adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
