Manuscript Letter signed: "Thos. H. Ruger" as Colonel, 33rd Infantry Brigade and Brevet Major Brigadier General, 1 page, 7½x10. Headquarters 33rd US Infantry, Atlanta, Georgia, 1867 July 9. To E. B. French, Second Auditor U.S. Treasury, Washington, D.C. In full: "I have the honor to transmit herewith 'Quarterly Return of Deceased Soldiers' of the334d U.S. Infantry for the second quarter 1867. I am, Sir, Very Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant." Thomas H. Ruger (1833-1907) led troops in many of the Civil War's key battles, including the Shenandoah campaign, Antietam (where he was wounded), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Atlanta campaign, and the Battle of Franklin. Having achieved the rank of Major General of Volunteers, he became a regular army colonel in 1866, attaining again the rank of major general before his retirement (1897). Ruger was active in Reconstruction, and was Superintendent of West Point (1871-1876). 2 horizontal fold creases. Edges lightly toned. Left edge lightly ragged. Otherwise fine condition.
