COSMONAUTS: VALERY BYKOVSKY and ALEXANDR VIKTORENKO. Commemorative Envelope signed: "V. Bykovsky" and "A. Viktorenko" in Russian, 6½x4½. Pair of East German stamps commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of Facsism (1945-1985) affixed, pictorially postmarked August 26, 1988, the 10th anniversary of the first joint Soviet-East German space flight. In 1963, VALERY BYKOVSKY flew aboard Vostok 5. The mission holds the record for the longest ever flown (five days) by a single astronaut. In 1976, Bykovsky commanded Soyuz 22. The crew spent 21 days in space. In 1978, Sigmund Jaehn became the first East German in space when he and Bykovsky spent a week aboard Salyut 6 performing experiments. In 1987, ALEXANDR VIKTORENKO flew aboard Soyuz TM-3. The crew visited the Mir space station for eight days. Viktorenko made his second space flight commanding Soyuz TM-8 in 1988. It docked with the Mir space station, where Viktorenko stayed for six months. He performed five space walks during this mission. In 1992, Viktorenko flew aboard Mir again for five months.
