WILLIAM H. EMORY. Important ALS: "Wm Emory", 3p, 4½x7. Washington, 1866 April 3. To Maryland Senator John Creswell. In part: "Since seeing you this morning I have seen Genl Grant who informed me the proceedings of the Board in St Louis has gone over to the Sect of War, and notwithstanding his recommendation endorsed on Sheridan's letter which I handed you copies of this morning, I infer from what he says that my name is not on the list of Brevet for M.G. recommended by the Board. I have therefore urgently to request you will see the Secretary of War at as early a period as possible and get him to adopt General Grants (sic) recommendation in my case and place me on his roll list....Hence my anxiety that you should [see] Mr. Stanton in the morning. This is a matter of life and death with me and I feel such anxiety on the subject..." WILLIAM H. EMORY (1811-1887) served under GENERAL SHERIDAN in the Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864. Seven days after Emory wrote this letter, on April 10, 1866, in a letter to the President, Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON recommended Brevet Brigadier-General William H. Emory of the United States Army and Colonel of the Fifth Regiment United States Cavalry, to be Major-General by brevet "for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Cedar Creek, Va., to date from March 13, 1865". President Johnson forwarded Stanton's recommendation to the U.S. Senate which approved the promotion. Folds, slightly creased. Fine condition.
