WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK
The year he ran for President on the Democratic ticket, he regrets that he has no recent photo to send to a young admirer.
Autograph Letter signed: "Winfield Scott Hancock", 2 pages (integral leaf), 5x8. Governor's Island, New York, 1880 February 1. To J. B. Land "My Dear Young Sir", Louisville, Kentucky, in full: "Your note of Jan. 20 last was only received today. The engraving which I send herewith [?] [Item not included.]. I am much obliged to learn of your kindly thoughts concerning me. I may have a photograph taken a long time ago. If so, I will endorse it. I have been in New York for several years. We have had none taken here! I had some taken once elsewhere, a year or so since, but I have none now. If I send you one, it will probably be a carte de visite of 1864. In that case I shall regret I cannot give you a later one. I am very truly yours". Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886), a highly successful Union Corps commander during the Civil War and a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1880, losing very narrowly to James A. Garfield by a margin of fewer than 40,000 votes out of 9 million cast. (The Electoral Vote margin was wider, but far from a landslide: 214-155.) Hancock was Commanding General of the U.S. Army's Department of the East, headquartered on Governor's Island, from 1877 until his death. Two horizontal folds. 3½-inch horizontal tear near bottom edge, Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
