WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK The dashing Civil War commander poses in his Union uniform for 2½x3½ photo, signs his name in black ink Inscribed Photograph Signed: "For Major Genl J.L. Donaldson/U.S.A./with compliments of/Winfd S. Hancock/Major Genl U.S.A./Fort Leavenworth, Kansas/Januy 7. 67".  Sepia, 2½x4 overall, image 2½x3½ (two surfaces). Carte-de-visite portrait taken in Philadelphia (imprint on verso). WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824-1886), a highly successful Union Corps commander during the Civil War and a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1880, losing to James A. Garfield. He was Commanding General of the U.S. Army's Department of the East, headquartered on Governor's Island, from 1877 until his death. Major General JAMES LOWRY DONALDSON (1814-1885) served as Chief Quartermaster of the Military Division of the Tennessee in June 1865 and of the Military Division of the Missouri until 1869, when he retired. Hancock was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth twice during his military career: in 1857-1858, during the "Border War" between pro- and anti-slavery factions and beginning on August 6, 1866, when he was named Commander of the Department of Missouri, the capacity in which he signed this photograph. Slightly creased at lower blank corners. Minor ink smudge at lower left corner, minor stains at upper left background. Mount is lightly soiled on front and verso. Overall, fine condition.
