WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK
Less than five months before his death, the General acknowledges receipt of a scientific paper on "the interoceanic problem".
Manuscript Letter signed: "Winfield Scott Hancock", 1 page, 5x8. Governor's Island, New York, 1885 September 7. To E. L. Cortell, Ann Arbor, Michigan, in full: "I beg to acknowledge the receipt of a copy of your address on 'The Interoceanic Problem and its Scientific Solution', with thanks. I am very truly yours". Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886), a highly successful Union Corps commander during the Civil War and a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1880, losing narrowly to James A. Garfield 4.45 million (214 electoral) votes to 4.44 million (155 electoral) votes. He was Commanding General of the U.S. Army's Department of the East, headquartered on Governor's Island, from 1877 until his death. Edward Lawrence Cortell was the author of many scholarly papers. He had co-authored with former President Ulysses S. Grant an article criticizing a proposal for an interoceanic canal through Nicaragua, and the article sent to Hancock probably addressed the same topic. Two horizontal folds. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
