WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK
The General and his wife and mother all signed this 2-year promissory note for $104.
Promissory Note signed: "Winfield S. Hancock", Almira Hancock" and "Adaline Russell", 8½x3½. St. Louis, Mo., 1876 December 28. Promissory note payable 24 months from the date to Thomas T. Turner Trustee in the amount of $104.00. On verso, a description of the distribution of the proceeds of the note is twice signed "Thos G. Turner" as Trustee. ($104 in 1876 would equal approximately $2,164 today.) WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824-1886), a highly successful Union Corps commander during the Civil War and a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1880, losing very narrowly to James A. Garfield 4.45 million (214 electoral) votes to 4.44 million (155 electoral) votes. He was Commanding General of the U.S. Army's Department of the East, headquartered on Governor's Island, from 1877 until his death. Confederate General Lewis Armistead, a close friend of the Hancock's, was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg while assaulting Hancock's troops and bequeathed his personal Bible to ALMIRA (RUSSELL) HANCOCK, who had married Hancock in 1850. ADALINE (DUBOIS) RUSSELL was the mother of Mrs. Hancock. Ink cancellations through signatures. Embossed stamp touches the "Russe" in Russell and the "k" in Hancock of Winfield's signature. Lightly soiled at blank margins, staple holes at left margin. Overall, fine condition.
