GERMAN FIGHTER ACES
The four members of the Luftwaffe: Hahn, Osterkamp, Bühligen, and von Rettberg, pen their names on this commemorative envelope honoring the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the British Coastal Command Air Sea Rescue Service, 1941-1971
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Ralph v Rettburg/ [difficult to decipher]/ 1940", "Happy landings!/ [difficult to decipher] Osterkamp,/ Gen. htnt, a, D", "[untranslated German]!/ Assi Hahn", and "Kurt Bühligen",  all in blue ink, 6½x4¾. Envelope commemorating the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the British Coastal Command Air Sea Rescue Service, 1941-1971. Postmarked British Forces Postal Service. One British stamp affixed. Color illustration of a Supermarine Walrus printed on left side with "Royal Air Force/ Pitreavie Castle" printed underneath. The identities of signers and their accomplishments are neatly printed in German on verso. Verso postmarked R. A. F. Post Room, Pitreavie, Dunfermilne, Fife, June 2, 1971. HANS "ASSI" HAHN (1914-1982) was a German fighter ace who downed 108 enemy aircraft in 560 combat missions. Once he reached 41 aerial victories he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, which at the time was Germany most prestigious military decoration. THEODOR "THEO" OSTERKAMP (1892-1975) was a Luftwaffe fighter ace who was one of the few men to tally victories in both World Wars. In World War I, he racked up 32 victories, and in World War II he accumulated an additional 6 victories. The leader of Jagdgeschwader 51 (one of the most efficient Luftwaffe fighter wings during the Second World War) during the Battle of Britain, Osterkamp was appointed honorary chairman of the Gemeinschaft der Jagdflieger, the Association of Fighter Pilots in 1960. KURT BÜHLIGEN (1917-1985) served in the Luftwaffe as a flying ace during World War II. In over 700 operations he was able to take down 112 enemy aircraft. Although he was never shot down, as engine failure during an operation caused his plane to go down and he was taken prisoner. For his service, Bühligen was given the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. RALPH VON RETTBERG (1911-2004) was a German fighter ace who flew for the Luftwaffe during the Second World War and tallied 8 victories. He received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross in recognition of his service. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
