DOOLITTLE'S RAIDERS: TOM GRIFFIN
Photograph of the crew of Plane #9, on which Griffin served as navigator.
Photograph signed: "Tom Griffin". B/w, 11x8½. Depicts the five-man crew of Plane #9. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80 men on 16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS Hornet on April 18, 1942. The raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Plane #9 conducted a highly effective bombing of the Tokyo Gas and Electric Company on the shore of Tokyo Bay before flying on to China. Although pilot H. F. Watson was seriously injured after the crew bailed out, all crew members survived the raid. The plane's navigator, Thomas C. Griffin (1917-2013), later served in the European Theater. Shot down over North Africa, he spent nearly two years as a German POW. Minor nick at left edge, two black marks at lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
