MALA POWERS
The actress sends a letter to a fan discussing the film Flight of
the Lost Balloon
Typed Letter signed: "Mala Powers", 1p, 7¼x10½. Fort Laududale
[spelling discrepancy in letter], Florida, 19 May 1982. On personal letterhead
to "Jack". In full: "Thanks so much for your nice letter.
Enclosed are the pictures you sent. [not included] I have signed the one
from the FLIGHT OF THE LOST BALLON, but did not sign the second picture as it is
not of me. I wonder if it could have been of Marshall Thompson in another film
as I do not recall that scenic location having appeared in FLIGHT OF THE LOST
BALLOON. I am enclosing a portrait photo for your collection. [not
included] Best wishes to you in all your endeavors. Very truly yours,". A
radio and stage actress since early childhood, Mala Powers, born in 1931, was
discovered by Ida Lupino who starred Powers in her 1950 film Outrage.
That same year, she was signed to star opposite Ferrer in Cyrano de
Bergerac. Powers was praised for her beauty, sensitivity and naturalness in
portraying Cyrano's great love, Roxanne. It remains her best-known film.
After a life-threatening illness nipped her career in the bud, Powers spent the
majority of her subsequent career appearing in low budget Westerns and adventure
films due to difficulty in obtaining production insurance. Fine
condition.
