Typed Letter signed: "Malcolm E. Nichols".1p. 7x9¼. Boston,
Massachusetts, 1928 May 22, City of Boston, Office of the Mayor
letterhead. To: Mr. James T. Williams, Jr., New York, New York. In
full: "Dear Jimmie: I missed you in the crowd Saturday night at the Arena
and tried unsuccessfully afterwards to find you at the Copley Plaza where I had
been told you registered. I wanted very much to have you sit down with other
guests at luncheon and dinner. I am grateful for the splendid address you
delivered at the Exercises held at the Boston Arena. As a literary contribution
it is entitled to a high place in the program of the day and I am saying only
what many people are saying to me. With many thanks and sincere regards, I am,
Cordially yours," Before and after Malcolm Nichols (1876-1951) served
as Mayor of Boston, he was first a journalist covering the Massachusetts State
House for The Boston Traveler and later the Boston Post. Nichols,
a Republican, Harvard graduate and attorney, served in the Massachusetts
House of Representatives (1907-1909), the Massachusetts Senate (1918-1919) and
as Mayor of Boston (1926-1930). Nichols was married in 1915, widowed in 1925
and married his wife's twin sister in 1926. Horizontal fold crease. Paperclip
creases at upper left margin. Lightly soiled and creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
