MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE
Signed autograph letter on his personal stationery (1977)
Autograph Letter signed: "Malcolm Muggeridge", 1 page, 5¼x7. Park Cottage, Robertsbridge, Sussex (England), 1977 July 16. On personal letterhead to an unnamed party. In full: "With warm regards & good wishes for the survival of G. S. Michael at Rowes & a [phrase illegible]." English journalist, author and commentator Malcolm Muggeridge (1903-1990) was attracted to communism in his youth. Quickly disillusioned after traveling to the USSR in 1932, he smuggled out of the country reports of widespread famine, for which he would be posthumously honored 75 years later by the now independent Ukraine's Order of Freedom award. Muggeridge served in Britain's Secret Intelligence Service during World War II. Always provocative, Muggeridge was temporarily fired by the BBC in 1957 after publishing "Does England Really Need a Queen" during Queen Elizabeth II's visit to the US. Reputedly a drinker and womanizer in his youth, Muggeridge grew increasingly culturally conservative, attacking casual sex and drug use, and even the Beatles. He adopted Christianity and began writing extensively on religious themes. Horizontal mailing fold. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
