After first appearing as Dr. Phillip Chandler in television's acclaimed St. Elsewhere in 1982, DENZEL WASHINGTON (b. 1954) moved to the big screen, starring as anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987). Washington was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for that role, and he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar two years later for Glory. After nominations for Best Actor Oscars for the title roles in Malcolm X (1992) and The Hurricane (1999), Washington won the top prize for Training Day in 2001. Shown in movie still from Mr. 3000 (2004). ANGELA BASSETT (b. 1958) won a Golden Globe for her performance in Malcolm X (1992). She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for portraying Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It? (1993). Among her other noteworthy performances are Boyz n the Hood (1991), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998) and Akeelah and the Bee (2006). Besides Tina Turner and Betty Shabazz (Malcolm X's spouse, as shown here), Bassett has portrayed Rosa Parks (in a 2003 biofilm) and Michelle Obama (in a Simpson's episode). In 1997 Bassett married actor Courtney Vance, whom she met when both were graduate students at Yale. Fine condition.
