3¾x5¾ color image of the longtime Mayor of Stuttgart and son of "the Desert Fox"
Photograph signed: "M Rommel". Color, 3¾x5¾. Manfred Rommel (1928-2013) is the only son of German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the legendary "Desert Fox". His father, implicated on the July 20 Plot to assassinate Hitler (1944), was compelled to commit suicide on Hitler's promise that his family would be spared if he did so. Informed by his father that this was going to happen, Manfred Rommel watched the elder Rommel be led away to his death by two German generals. Rommel then deserted his anti-aircraft unit, surrendering to the French Army. Rommel, a member of Germany's conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union, was Mayor of Stuttgart from 1974 to 1996. Still in demand as a public speaker, despite the encroachment of Parkinson's Disease, he has written several books, and co-edited his father's wartime papers with British historial Basil Liddell-Hart. Rommel established strong friendships with the sons of his father's principal wartime foes, George Patton and Bernard Montgomery. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
