MARC CHAGALL.ALS: "M[illegible]" in Russian, 2p, 8½x11¼. Bad Blankenburg, Thuringerwald, Germany, 1923 July 16. To Bella Naumovna. In full: "My beloved Bella Naumovna, I do not envy you and am very sorry that you have to live in this scorching heat. How you manage to take it? Here is the place where even gods themselves could live, but instead, plain people as well as grey haired ladies reside here. The nature here, despite being German, is as innocent and good as French or Russian nature could be, but I am not yet ready to surrender to it. I am still afraid, I do not trust it. Have you heard how lucky I was with the studio? I took the news from T.S. with a smile. Do you often visit this hell? The studio? Perhaps, God forbid, you could start working, perhaps painting? Though I am afraid you will be baked in this heat. Write how it's cooking. And is it true that you think of going to America. I think though that it won't be bad for you there. So when is it going to happen? I myself am terribly anxious to get to Paris, back to my work. But the doctor is after me, he says I should take it easy for a while. Bel Saulov with Idochka are here. No matter how it bites here and how hard it is to compete with [illegible] we have made up our mind to try as best as we can and not to give up we will pay. Write. Bel Saulov and Idochka send their warmest regards. Ida is a great success here. They spoil her with chocolates and flowers from everywhere, wishes - kids are all fighting with one another - everyone wants to play with her. Best wishes to all of yours. Kiss you. Yours, M[illegible]." BELLA NAUMOVNA HERMONT SCHNEE had been young Chagall's teacher in Russia. Married in 1924, she moved to Chicago with her new husband, and she and Chagall remained friends through correspondence. BEL was his wife and IDA ("Idochka") was their seven-year-old daughter. Considered one of the most original and eminent figures in 20th century art, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was influenced by Cubism, Fauvism and Surrealism. His works, executed in a wide variety of media, from oils to stained glass, often featured subjects drawn from Russian village life, Jewish folklore and Hasidic mysticism. Unevenly toned. Frayed at left edge. Minor nicks to top and right edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
