I gave it to her and translated it. She was satisfied and thanks you. I am happy that your book is coming out. I wish you luck. I am often in the village where I work and my wife also on her book." Lightly creased. ¼-inch tears at lower blank margin and at mid-vertical fold (all intact). Withoriginal stamped envelope,addressed by Chagall to: "S. Tenenbaum/23. W. 93. Str./New York/N.Y." Lightly soiled. Torn open at top. Russian-born French artist Marc Chagall and his wife, Bella, had come to the U.S. to escape the Nazi invasion of France. Tragically, Bella died later in 1944. Her book, Burning Lights, was published posthumously in 1946, the year before Chagall returned to France. Illustrated with 36 pen-and-ink drawings by her husband, the book was a memoir of her childhood in the Russian village of Vitebsk (now Belarus), where she and Chagall were born.Two items.
