MARC CHAGALL. Scarce ALS: "Best to you/Marc Chagall", 1p, 4x5½ lined sheet. No place, no date. To "Dear Varnalt". In French, translated in full: "We will be glad some day to see you at our home. Unfortunately, at the moment my wife and my child just had surgery (for appendicitis) and they are still at the clinic. Please call. Best to you." Russian-born French artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) had one daughter, Ida, born in 1916 to his first wife, Bella Rosenfeld, whom he had married in 1915 in their native Russia. Bella died of pneumonia at a U.S. hospital in 1944. Chagall married his second wife, Valentine "Vava" Brodsky, in 1952. Considered one of the most original and eminent figures in 20th century art, Chagall was influenced by Cubism, Fauvism and Surrealism. His works, executed in a wide variety of media, from oils to stained glass, often featured subjects drawn from Russian village life, Jewish folklore and Hasidic mysticism. Lightly creased, diagonal crease touches the lower portion of the "M" in Marc. Rectangular shading at upper blank edge, which is perforated. Overall, fine condition.
