Important Typed Letter Signed: "Marc Chagall", 1p, 8¼x10½. In French, translated. Vence, Alpes-Maritmes, France, 1957 March 12. To Mrs. Serger. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter of February 7th including the photo of my painting you call 'Inspiration.' Myself, I don't express my feelings about my paintings, I like this gouache and I'm happy you have it. I did it when I returned from America, in Orgeval; it is the chapel with the roofs of the village that you can see on the lower part of the painting. I lived there, it's near Paris. I give you this information so you can use it as a proof, if necessary, as I don't like to give the signature you're asking of me. You're also talking about a painting with a bouquet. These are the first flowers I ever painted in my life. If you have photos of my older paintings, or others of me, I would be glad if you could send them to me. My son-in-law, Mr. Franz Meyer, Director of the Kunsthalle in Berne, is putting together a book about me and photos would be useful to him…." Chagall was approaching 70 at the time of this letter. Although he rarely discussed his paintings, a revised edition of his 1932 autobiography was published in the year of this letter.
