MARC LAWRENCE
Shown in his role from The Ox-Bow Incident
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Chuke/Marc Lawrence".
B/w 8x10.Although Lawrence dates the picture from 1941, it is
actually from 1943, showing him as rancher and lynch mob member Jeff Farnley
in the memorable 1943 film, The Ox-Bow Incident. Actor Marc
Lawrence (1910-2005) entered films in 1933 and played more than 100
character parts. Swarthy and pock-marked, he specialized in portraying
sinister Mafia hoods, despite a far greater range. When called before the
House Un-American Activities Committee, Lawrence admitted he had once been a
member of the Communist Party. He was blacklisted and left for Europe, where he
continued to make films. When he returned to America, he resumed his position as
a familiar and talented purveyor of gangland types. A writer and director as
well, Lawrence remained active into his nineties. Ink note unknown hand on
verso. Fine condition.
