MARCELLO CORTIS
Signed photograph (4x6) of the Czech baritone shown for La Scala Theatre where he debuted as Melot in Tristan. Extremely rare!
Inscribed printed photograph signed in ink: "To Mr. Sousa/souvenir of/Marcello Cortis/1959", black ink. B/w, 4x6. Printed caption for La Scala Theatre in lower margin. Marcello Cortis (1915-1962) was a Czech baritone and popular European opera star during the late 1940s through the 1950s. Originally born Kurt Mautner in Prague, Cortis made his professional debut 1940 in Milan. He began a successful tour, however, with the outbreak of World War II, Cortis was forced to postpone his musical career until 1947. That year he debuted at the world famous theatre, La Scala in Milan where he played Melot in Tristan and later Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte. From there he toured Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam and Vienna where he was a major star. Cortis' most famous role is the title character of Falstaff (Verdi). He also is particularly known for his productions of Mozart operas in France and New Zealand. Signature in adequate contrast but legible. Fine condition.
