Price: $260.00
MARCHETTE CHUTE
She quotes Chaucer, the subject of one of her biographies, as advice
for young people, and decorated her letter with a drawing of a "Chaucerian
bird"
Autograph Letter signed: "Marchette Chute", 1 page, 8½x11. No
place, no date. In the upper margin she has drawn a bird perched on a limb. To
"John Christopher Allen and Robert Merritt Allen", in full: "I
have drawn you a little Chaucerian bird and I send with it a line from a poem
that Chaucer wrote about 1390. 'Hold the hiye way, and lat thy gost thee lede'.
In modern English this would read - 'Hold the high way, and let your ghost
(spirit) lead you.' When I graduated from high school, one of my teachers wrote
this line in my copy of the yearbook, and for every generation it is an
excellent piece of advice. For we each of us find, as we grow up, what is our
highest way to follow, and we find, also, that nothing brings more joy."
Marchette Chute (1909-1994) wrote scholarly but readable
biographies of William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer and Ben Jonson, and
a well-regarded re-telling of Shakespearean tales: Stories from
Shakespeare. She wrote a collection of poems for children: Rhymes About
Ourselves. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Corners worn. Bottom right
edge torn. Otherwise, fine condition.
