MARK HANNA
As a US Senator, the Presidential kingmaker suggests that a citizen from Indiana refer a riverine concern to an Indiana legislator.
Typed Letter signed: "W. A. Hanna" as US Senator, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1902 January 7. On Senate letterhead to Joseph D. Oliver, South Bend, Indiana. In full: "Your letter of the 2nd instant has been received, and very carefully noted. I am not aware of any proposed attempt to declare the St. Joseph River unnavigable, but would suggest that you have either your member of Congress or one of the Senators from Indiana look after the matter, and I will be glad to cooperate or take any action they may desire when it will be of assistance. Truly yours". Printed image of Hanna, captioned "Mark Hanna, McKinley's sponsor" affixed in lower right. A successful Ohio businessman and campaign fundraiser, Marcus Alonzo "Mark" Hanna (1837-1904) was named Chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1896. He helped fellow Ohioan William McKinley secure the 1896 Republican presidential nomination and win the election, raising a then unprecedented amount of money for the campaign. Hanna represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 1897 until his death in 1904. His funeral services were held in the Chamber of the United States Senate. Hanna, who remained a close advisor to President McKinley, was a reluctant supporter of Theodore Roosevelt as McKinley's running mate in 1900. Roosevelt stood for much that Hanna was against. His famous remark on learning of McKinley's passing were, "Now that damn cowboy's in the White House!" Normal mailing folds. Creased and toned. Tears in top right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
