MARCUS M. POMEROY
Ink signature of the anti-Lincoln newspaperman on a printed autograph card
Printed Card signed in ink: "M. M. Pomeroy/Editor Democrat/March 31/69", 5x2¾. Marcus Mills "Brick" Pomeroy (1833-1896), editor and publisher of several Wisconsin newspapers, was a prominent "Copperhead" Democrat during the Civil War. During the Presidential campaign of 1864, he wrote that Abraham Lincoln was "the fungus from the corrupt womb of bigotry and fanaticism" and the worst tyrant since Nero; than anyone who voted for him was a traitor and murderer; and if he were re-elected, "we trust some bold hand will pierce his heart with dagger for the public good." When Lincoln was assassinated the following April, Pomeroy himself narrowly escaped a lynch mob. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
