Hyams' grandfather was impresario Sol Hurok. "Employment of Day Player" for her appearance in Magnum Force. Her salary is $250 (daily rate, three-day guarantee), $1000 weekly conversion rate. In the Clint Eastwood "Dirty Harry" film Magnum Force, Avery was the "Drano Girl", a prostitute who meets her tragic end when a pimp pours a can of Drano down her throat. She became a star 12 years later when she was cast as Shug in Steven Spielberg's adaptation of The Color Purple, a performance that won her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
