MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE
She pens a note to a fan inside her book Shooting the Russian War
Inscribed Book Signed: "Margaret Bourke-White/June 22, 1942" on the first blank flyleaf. Shooting the Russian War, written and photographed by Bourke-White, 298p, 6½x9¾, hardcover. Simon and Schuster, New York: 1942. First Edition. In full: "Dear Charlotte 'Seitland' - You've heard those stories so many times that I think it is downright charity on your part to read them too." Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971), who became known for her photographs of buildings and industrial sites, was the Associate Editor of "Fortune" magazine (1929-1933) and was on the staff of "Life" magazine from 1936-1969. Her photograph of the Fort Peck Dam in Montana appeared on the first cover of "Life" (November 23, 1936). In 1942, the year this book was published, Bourke-White became a photographer for the U.S. Air Force. The previous year, she had been the only American journalist to document German bombing raids on Moscow, and, in 1930, Bourke-White had been the first American journalist to visit the Soviet Union. After taking photographs of industrial buildings, she was invited back the following year and returned in the late 1930s (with Erskine Caldwell, whom she married) to capture the faces of the country's people. Cover slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
