Massachusetts. In full: "In compliance with your request, I am sending
you my autograph for your collection. Sincerely yours". Republican
MARGARET CHASE SMITH (1897-1995) was Maine's U.S.
Representative (1940-1949) and U.S. Senator (1949-1973). In 1964 she
became the first woman nominated for President at a major party's
convention), and she was reportedly considered as Barry Goldwater's running
mate that year. A visiting professor for the Woodrow Wilson National Scholarship
Foundation (1973-1976), Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of
Freedom in 1989. From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward
(1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India
Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO of
Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home
