letter thanking receiver for his thoughtful letter
Typed letter signed: "Margaret Smith" in blue ink. 1 page,
8x10½. Written on U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services letterhead. March 19,
1968. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Mr. Lowe: I appreciate your
thoughtfulness in writing me as you have in your letter of March eleventh. You
may be sure that I shall continue striving to justify the confidence you have
placed in me. With best wishes. Sincerely yours". Smith (1897-1995) was
Maine's U.S. Representative (1940-1949) and U.S. Senator (1949-1973) and an
unsuccessful candidate for the Republican Party Presidential nomination (1964,
when she became the first woman nominated at a major party's convention). A
visiting professor for the Woodrow Wilson National Scholarship Foundation
(1973-1976), Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989. Normal
mailing folds. Light surface creases. Small stain in bottom margin. Otherwise,
fine condition.
