Typed Letter signed: "Margaret Chase Smith" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1970 April 24. On letterhead of Senate Committee on Armed Services to George R. Sanders. Jr., General Manager, KWJJ Broadcasting Company, Portland, Oregon. In full: "Enclosed is the autographed picture. [not included] It is one of my best. Wish I could find the photographer. I would like one of these. With best wishes. Sincerely". Smith (1897-1995) was Maine's U.S. Representative (1940-1949) and U.S. Senator (1949-1973) and an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican Party Presidential nomination (1964, when she became the first woman nominated at a major party's convention). A visiting professor for the Woodrow Wilson National Scholarship Foundation (1973-1976), Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989. George R. Sanders, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV interview host, first in Los Angeles and later in Portland. Minor nicks on left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
