On her personal Senate letterhead to Basil O'Connor, New York. In full:
"Dear Mr. O'Connor: You are most kind to remember me at Christmas time,
and to send me the book 'Four Billion Dimes.' My wish for you and all of us is
health and happiness for 1956. Sincerely yours,". Republican MARGARET
CHASE SMITH (1897-1995) was Maine's U.S. Representative
(1940-1949) and U.S. Senator (1949-1973). In 1964 she became the first
woman nominated for President at a major party's convention), and she was
reportedly considered as Barry Goldwater's running mate that year. A visiting
professor for the Woodrow Wilson National Scholarship Foundation (1973-1976),
Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989. Basil
O'Connor (1892-1972), President Franklin Roosevelt's former law partner,
declined a post in the administration but was inspired by FDR's polio to become
a founder of what is now called the March of Dimes, and to head the American Red
Cross (1944-1950). Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
