Signature of the first female member of a British Cabinet
Signature: "Margaret G. Bondfield. Dec. 5th. 1934/Ex Minister of Labour Justice of the Peace Doctor of Laws/Privy Councillor", 4½x3½. Margaret Grace Bondfield (1873-1953) was active in the British trade union movement, rising to President of the Trade Union Congress General Council in 1923. A member of the Labour Party, she served in the House of Commons 1923-1924, 1926-1931. In 1929, Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald named her Minister of Labour, the first woman to serve as British Cabinet Minister. She wrote six books on public affairs. Toned. Mounting residue and pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
