Handwritten, signed letter from the children's author dated 1863,
writing that the recipient will approve of her left-handed writing, "all but the
signature". Extremely rare!
Autograph note signed: "Margaret Gatty", in black ink, 4½x2½
affixed to 6¼x3¼ sheet. February 11, 1863. In full: "You will approve
of lefthanded communication - all but the signature. Yours sincerely".
English author Margaret Gatty (1809-1873) wrote primarily children's
fiction, using the medium to help convey her appreciation of God and science.
She didn't believe in the scientific revelations of the time, specifically
Darwin's Origin of Species. Some of her books include
Parables from Nature, Worlds not Realised, and Aunt Judy's
Tales Note irregularly cut and pieced together on backing sheet. Ink
notes (unknown hand). Backing sheet irregularly cut. Paper fragments to right
margin. Light surface creases. Stained from adhesive on bottom margin. Small
notched on bottom left of autograph. Otherwise, fine
condition.
