A Christmas card from the mezzo soprano with warm wishes and thanks
for a "lovely gift"
Christmas/holiday card signed: "and many thanks/for your lovely
gift/Margaret Matzenauer", 8x4¾ open flat, 4x4¾ closed. The daughter of an
opera singer and conductor, Margaret Matzenauer (1881-1963) was famous
for her mezzo-soprano voice, performing throughout Europe and the U.S. She
debuted as Puck in Oberon in 1901, and went onto to appear in a
large number of operas, including Il trovatore, Aida, and
Lohengrin. She performed at the Metropolitan Opera for a total of
19 seasons in a large number of roles, in addition to performing in concerts and
venues elsewhere. Her last stage credit was also her Broadway debut,
appearing in the 1942 play Vicki. Slightly toned. Slightly soiled.
