MARGARET MITCHELL
She thanks an Atlanta man for his interest in Gone With the Wind.
TLS: "Margaret Mitchell Marsh", 1p, 4x5. Atlanta, 1941 August 27. To Mr. Henry Hambrick, Atlanta. In full: "Thank you so much for the interest in 'Gone With the Wind' which made you call on me". I enjoyed our talk." The epic Gone With the Wind had been published in 1936, becoming an instant best-seller and winning author Margaret Mitchell Marsh (1900-1949) the 1937 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. Producer David O. Selznick purchased film rights to the book for $50,000, the most ever paid for a first novel at that time. In 1939, Mitchell attended the Atlanta premiere of the epic film, which would break box office records and win ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The gracious tone of this letter notwithstanding, Mitchell soon tired of her celebrity status, complaining in letters to other friends about the many reporters, fans, tourists and souvenir hunters drawn to her home. Signature partially written over typed name. Lightly soiled. Tape stain at upper edge. Overall, fine condition
