MARGARET WHITTON
The director and stage actress pens a short letter to John Willis, chief editor of Theatre
World
Autograph letter signed: "Margaret Whitton," 8½x11. New York City, postmarked 17
November 1980. Written on the official letterhead of The Guthrie Theater. To "Dear Mr.
[John] Willis." In full: "Thank you for your letter. Regrettably I haven't a new photo for your
files, being photographed is my least favorite aspect of this business. I appreciate your inquiry and
will if I ever get a new photo send one along. Meanwhile, I wish you best of luck with your newest
edition of Theatre World and look onward to seeing it this year especially. Best." Hand addressed
envelope (9¼x4) included (lightly creased and toned, fine condition). Margaret Whitton
(1949-2016) appeared on Broadway in Steaming (1982) and the hit musical Marlene (1999).
She may be best known to movie audiences as the team owner desiring to desert
Cleveland in Major League (1989); and a scene-stealing performance in The Secret of My
Success (1987). She has directed several plays, and her first film directorial effort, The Loop, is
scheduled for release in 2011. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the
beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is
regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While
producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the
nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony
for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal
mailing folds. Creased and lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
