MARGARITA FISCHER POLLARD
A handwritten letter to John Willis, editor-in-chief of Theatre World, signed by the actress
. Autograph Letter signed: "Margarita Fischer Pollard", 2 pages. 5¼x3¾ (folded) 5¼x7½ (open flat) accompanied by handwritten envelope. Vista, California, 04/22/1965. To "Dear John Willis", in full:"Thank you for letting me know about Danny. He seemed so young-too young to die. I am grieved over his passing. I hope you will carry on for him in the same kind and loving way he did and show the interest in the silent motion picture personalities of so long ago. My best wishes for your success and may your life be a long and happy one. Sincerely Margarita Fischer Pollard" Margarita Fischer Pollard (1886-1975) was an American silent film actress. Beginning her career as a child star, Fischer made her stage debut in Portland, Oregon in the famous child role of Adrienne in The Celebrated Case. Fisher began acting in short silent films in 1910, which would lead her to her most well known roll of Eliza in Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was this role that helped Fischer to win a long-term contract with the American Film Company. She received international acclaim as the American Beauty of the screen. Her face was pictured in the heart of a rose, which became one of the movie's trademarks. Married to fellow actor/director Harry A. Pollard from 1911 until his death in 1934, the pair launched the Pollard Picture Plays Corporation in April 1916. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges.Normal mailing fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
