MARGHERITA CAROSIO and MARCELLA DE GRANDIS
Showbill for a 1954 run of Puccini's La boheme at the Theatre Royal at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, signed by sopranos Margherita Carosio and Marcella De Grandis. With three other unidentified signatures.
Show bill signed "Margherita Carosio" and "Marcella De Grandis" in blue ink. With 2 unknown signatures in blue ink on cast page and 1 unknown signature in black ink on page 3. B/w, 12 pages, 5½x8½, bound with 1 staple. With one 1-page 8¾x7¼ unsigned questionnaire. Sixpenny showbill for a two-week run of Puccini's La Boheme, beginning Nov. 8, 1954, at the Theatre Royal at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Carosio played Mimi and De Grandis played Musetta. It's a hell of a thing when you're primarily remembered for your understudy's accomplishments, but that's the fate of Italian coloratura soprano Carosio (1907-2005). She dropped out of a 1949 production of Bellini's I Puritani to perform the part of Brünnhilde in Wagner's Die Walkure, and her understudy learned her role in five days, electrifying the opera world. That understudy was Maria Callas. Make no mistake, though, Carosio was also a talented opera singer - one of the major opera stars in Italy before World War II and much in demand in her native country for her light coloratura voice. She debuted in concert at age 14 and in opera at 16 in the title role of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and retired after almost 40 years in opera in 1959. In addition to playing Teatro alla Scala and houses all over Italy, Carosio also performed at Covent Garden. Lightly toned and creased. Signatures touch. Torn seal on covers. Staple is rusted. Questionnaire has been folded thrice, comes folded once. Otherwise in fine condition.
