MARGO ROSE The famed marionette designer signs this album leaf in pencil Signature: “Margo Rose” in pencil, 4½x3. Margo Rose (1903-1997) was a marionette designer famously associated with the popular children's television program Howdy Doody (1987-1960). After graduating from Cornell College and studying in Rome, Rose joined the renowned Tony Sarg puppet troupe. In 1928, she met her future husband, Rufus Rose. The couple formed their own company, the Rufus Rose Marionettes, and began traveling and performing across the U.S. They eventually settled in Waterford, Connecticut in 1943. The Roses were hired by NBC in 1952 to work on Howdy Doody. Although they were not the creators behind the show's namesake Howdy marionette, they did create several of the other characters including Buzz Beaver, Don Jose Bluster, and Windy Scuttlebut. In addition, the couple won a Peabody Award for Children's Programming for their reimagining of the Pinocchio story: "The Blue Fairy". An inductee into the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame, Rose continued to remain an active member of her community after her retirement, teaching puppetry classes and literary groups. Staining below signature, concentrated in two specific areas. Toned. Left edge irregular from being removed from album. Otherwise, fine condition.
