MARGRETA ELKINS
The talented mezzo-soprano pens this letter to a fan on light blue stationery thanking her
for her letter
Autograph Letter signed: “Margreto Elkins” in black ink, 5¼x7. No place, 1961 June 13.
Royal Opera House, 1966 June 13. To “Dear Mr. Jones”. In full: “Thank you very much for
your letter./ I am enclosing a photo taken as Oktavian in “Der Rosenkavalier”./ Best wishes”.
Photo not included. Margreta Elkins (1930-2009) was an Australian mezzo-soprano.
Primarily known for her performances at both the Royal Opera and Opera Australia, Elkins
also performed in many of the other esteemed opera houses across the globe. Perhaps
somewhat surprisingly, she turned down offers to perform at the Metropolitan Opera,
Glyndebourne, and Bayreuth. After having her daughter, Elkins mostly sang in her native
country of Australia, only occasionally leaving the country to perform. Elkins was made a
Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to opera in 1984. A Wagner specialist,
Elkins has revealed that she considered her singing the role of Sieglinde in Die Walküre
to be one of the highlights of her career. Two horizontal mailing folds. Toned. Corners and
edges worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
