MARGUERITE "MISSY" LE HAND
On White House stationery, she directs a correspondent to send information on
a Hudson River matter to the President.
Typed Letter signed:"M. A. Le Hand", 1 page, 6¼x9¼. The
White House, Washington, 1933 September 14. To J. E. Spannuth, Esq.,
Pottsville, Pennsylvania. In full: "Will you kindly send to the
President for his inspection the item relating to Salisburg Island in the Hudson
River? Very truly yours". Marguerite LeHand (1898-1944), nicknamed
"Missy" by FDR's children, began her employment with Franklin D. Roosevelt after
his defeat as the Democratic nominee for Vice President and continued as his
secretary and confidant until 1941, when she suffered a debilitating stroke.
In 1921, the year after their 21-year association began, FDR suffered his polio
attack, and LeHand often accompanied him to Warm Springs, Georgia for his
treatments. LeHand was not only responsible for FDR's correspondence, much of
which she answered herself, she also held his power of attorney and managed his
accounts and served as hostess when Eleanor was absent. Although some
biographers have claimed that FDR and Missy LeHand had an amorous relationship,
she was warmly accepted by the President's family, including Eleanor. Normal
mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
