MARGUERITE CLARK The stage and silent film actress pens her name on this 3½x2½ card Signature: "Marguerite Clark/ Happyland", in black ink, 3½x2½. Two printed b/w photos, one measuring 3x2½ and the other 1x¾, affixed to card stock. Clark played the role of Sylvia in Happyland during its Broadway run from October 2, 1905 to June 2, 1906. Actress Marguerite Clark (1883-1940) made her Broadway debut in 1900, at age 17. In 1903, the diminutive (just under 5 feet tall) Clark was cast opposite 6'6" DeWolf Hopper in Mr. Pickwick. Naturally cast in youthful roles at first, Clark retained such a youthful appearance that she continued to play such roles into her thirties. She starred in several fantasy plays, including Snow White (1912). Clark made her first film at age 31, continuing to play fantasy roles such as The Goose Girl, and reprising her role in Snow White in 1916. All but the last of her 40 movies were made with Famous Players-Lasky. Her last feature, Scramble Wives, was produced and directed by Clark herself. After that film she retired from the film industry to the home of her husband, wealthy Louisiana plantation owner Harry Palmerston White. Clark inherited his aviation company, Wedell-Williams Air Service Corp., following his 1936 death in a plane crash. The actress died of pneumonia four years later. Adhesive remnants on verso. Lightly stained. Edges worn. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
