Dated February 9, No year on stationery of the Lyceum Club, Melbourne. To "Dear Miss Sussman". In full: "Very many thanks for all your kindness to me + the children in Hobart. The children are always talking about you. I will write again from Sydney + send the autographs, but I just wanted to send you this hurried line to let you know what a pleasure it was to meet you again + how much we appreciated your kindness./ I am/ yours very sincerely". Australian Marguerite Dale (1883-1963) was a member of the Lyceum Club's Literary Circle. She was part of the Hume family, which counts among its members the famed explorer of the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria, Hamilton Hume. Marguerite was a prominent Australian playwright, politician, and social reformer. She fought for women's rights and funded many of her activities by writing plays. Her fictional theatrical publications were quite popular in Australia, and she eventually took one of her works, The Mainstay, to London in 1923. In 1922, she was named a delegate to the League of Nations and earned the right to speak in front of the international organization's members. Gently bowed. Lightly toned. Rippling from adhesion to piece of paper. Corners of letter clipped. Otherwise, fine condition.
