Signed on verso by the South American opera singer who spent most of his career singing at the Teatro Colon. Signature: "Maria Caniglia/1948", and (translated from Spanish) “For Lydia/cordially/Jorge Algorta/1946” on verso. 8¼x4¾. Italian diva Maria Caniglia (1905-1979) was the leading dramatic soprano at Milan's La Scala from 1930 to 1951. Known for her performances in the Italian repertoire, she also performed at the Paris Opera, Covent Garden, Teatro Colon and the Metropolitan. She debuted at the Met on November 21, 1938, portraying Desdemona in Giuseppe Verdi's Othello. She was married to Italian composer and opera director Pino Donati. Jorge Algorta (born in Montevideo, Uruguay) was an opera singer who travelled to Milan, Italy in 1946 to pursue his dream of singing professionally. After over a decade performing around the world, particularly in the Teatro alla Scala, he returned to South America. In 1961, he took up residence in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and performed at the Teatro Colon until his death in 1980. Toned. Edges slightly worn, creased, and frayed. Binding holes on left margin. Ink stains on verso. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
