MARIA CEBOTARI
Black and white 3½x5½ photograph shown the soprano and actress staring into the camera, signed in blue ink
Inscribed Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: "Maria Cebotari" in blue felt tip. 3½x5½. B/w, 3½x5½. Maria Cebotari (1910-1949) was a celebrated Romanian soprano and actress, and one of the greatest opera stars in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. Beniamino Gigli considered Cebotari one of the greatest voices he ever heard, and even Maria Callas was compared to her; Angela Gheorghiu cited Maria Cebotari among the artists she admires the most. Beside her successful career at the opera houses, Cebotari appeared in many films related to opera-such as "Verdi's Three Women", "Maria Malibran" and "The Dream of Madame Butterfly". Maria Cebotari also played in the movie "Odesa in fiamme (Odessa in flames)" in 1942, directed by Carmine Gallope. Several of her surviving recordings are from live performances-either in the opera houses or in the studio for radio broadcast. They have now been almost all digitally remastered and their general quality is remarkable. Sadly, Maria succumbed to lung cancer in June 9, 1949. Her funeral was one of the most imposing demonstrations of love and honor any deceased artist has ever received in Vienna's history. Lightly toned and soiled. Ink smeared. Surface slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
