MARIA GAMBARELLI
Vintage photo, leaning over the back of a chair with a toothy smile,
inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Maria Gambarelli".
B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: February 6, 1937.
Born in Italy, Maria Gambarelli (1900-1990) was prima ballerina of the
Metropolitan Opera Ballet (1939-1941). Working for theater impresario Samuel
"Roxy" Rothafel, she danced in New York's Capitol Theater and on a 1920s radio
show with "Gamby's Girls," the precision dance group that later evolved
into the Rockettes. She appeared in three movies, and produced and choreographed
for her own dance company after leaving the stage. Saul Goodman
(1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and
theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other
autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy
photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and
creased. Lightly toned around edges. Ink stamp and paper clipping on verso.
