Document signed "Maria Nieves" and "Maria Nieves Rego" in blue ink. Blue ink notations in unknown hand. 2 pages, 5¾x8½, 1 sheet, front and verso. With 6¼x3¼ initiation fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at top edge. Membership form for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Argentina-born tango dancer and choreographer Nieves, born María Nieves Rego in 1938, had a hardscrabble childhood in Buenos Aires. Her father died when she was young, and she had to quit school in the 4th grade to help support her family. However, she was discovered at 15 by future tango legend (and future husband) Juan Carlos Copes and became one of the premiere tango dancers of the 1950s and 1960. Nieves was Copes' partner in Argentina and toured with him to around the world. The two wound up on Broadway, where she earned a Tony nomination for choreography for Tango Argentino (1985-1986), which helped to revive worldwide interest in the tango. Lightly toned and creased. Form has light nicks in top left corner edge. Receipt has light tear in left edge and carbon copy marks and was folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
