MARIAN ANDERSON and FRANZ RUPP
The singer signs her photograph in a promotional magazine for artists and her
accompanist signs his own page.
Magazine signed: "Marian Anderson" beneath color photograph of the contralto on the first
page, 24 pages, 8¾x11½. Also signed: "Franz Rupp" as accompanist on page 13 featuring
his black and white photograph and biography. Promotional book for artists presented by S.
Hurok, "Impresario of the Arts". Marian Anderson (1899-1993), a contralto who sang both
operas and spirituals, began her concert career in 1924 and debuted with the Philadelphia
Philharmonic in 1925. In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow
Anderson, a Black American, to perform in Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Hall. In response,
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the D.A.R. and arranged for a concert at the
Lincoln Memorial. Anderson, the first Black performer to debut with New York's
Metropolitan Opera (1955), later became a permanent member of the company. The late
conductor Arturo Toscanini commented of Anderson, "A voice like hers comes once in a
century." In 2005, she was honored on a 37-cent postage stamp. MarianAnderson's
accompanist for several years FRANZ RUPP (1901-1992) was born in Schongau, Germany.
After studying at the Munich Academy of Music he toured Europe as a concert soloist and
accompanist to artists like Marian Anderson,violinist Fritz Kreisler, and the cellist
Emanuel Feuermann. In 1938 he moved to New York City and soon established a presence
in New York's music circuit. Rupp continued to perform throughout his life and his final public
performance was in Austria in 1985. Identifying labels affixed at upper left corner of cover.

signature. Stray ink marks on inside cover. two images have been cut out from one of the pages
titled "At Home". Otherwise, fine condition.
