Anderson sends a letter sending thanks and an autograph magazine cover
Typed Letter Signed: "Marian Anderson", 1p, 7¼x10½. Mariana Farm, Danbury, Connecticut, 1963 February 3. To William Marc McCrary, New York. In full: "May we sincerely thank you for your gracious letter of January 11, 1964. One is always happy to hear from one's friends. It is our pleasure to return the December 30, 1946 TIME cover, autographed as you requested [not present]. In appreciation and with kind regards." (Magazine cover not included). The cover story of the December 30, 1946 issue of "Time" magazine picturing her began: "Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born. At Salzburg, back dropped by magical mountains, where Austria's great musical festivals were held before the war, and where he first heard Marian Anderson sing, Arturo Toscanini cried: "Yours is a voice such as one hears once in a hundred years.". Marian Anderson (1897-1993), a contralto who sang both operas and spirituals, began her concert career in 1924. In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Anderson, a Black American, to perform in Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Hall. In response, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the D.A.R. and arranged for a concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Anderson, who debuted with New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1955, became a permanent member of the company. In 2005, she was honored on a 37-cent postage stamp. Corners lightly creased. Fine condition.
